I don't do marketing, but here are some numbers from my experience.
My site has been up for 5 years. It has about 100 pages of free
content, all focused on helping small and self-publishers, and most
of those pages index quite highly on Google. I get about 1500 unique
visitors per month.
I moved my blog onto my site a couple of months ago. It has a very
small following, and hadn't been around long, but it got 4600 unique
visitors in the first month. Of course, getting cited 3 times by
Galleycat probably had something to do with that, but still . . .
Blogs seem to pay off.
