Hi Bill,
>I've given away quite a few copies to friends and relatives, even to folks
who expressed a willingness to buy. In a few cases, I just didn't feel
comfortable asking them to go buy it when I wasn't sure they'd have a real
interest in reading it.
When I first started out, I had the same feeling: I had trouble asking
people for money because I didn't think they'd be interested. After all, the
book was written by *me* - and who am I, but some poor writing schlub?
Then, one day I woke up and thought: "Hey, this isn't a hobby. This is my
business. I published the book as a way to make money. Either they buy the
book or they don't, but I have to put value on my hard work, time and
effort. $16.95 a copy doesn't seem like very much to ask."
Yup, I still give out books to reviewers. All others pay cash. Rarely do I
give a discount in direct retail transactions.
Your mileage may vary about discounts to retail customers. But I urge you to
change the way you think about your book. It has value - as do you!
