Amazon does not get the full 20% on direct orders to Lightning
Source. Only wholesalers get the full 20%. I have been told this by a
Lightning higher-up. But the exact discount Amazon gets from
Lightning has not been disclosed.

For most self publishers, including myself, there will be few retail
sales by anyone but Amazon and other online sellers anyway. And most
of the ones that there are will be special orders, in which discount
is not a factor. So, if I can double my profit per copy or more by
setting a 20% wholesale discount, there's no sense in worrying about
the very small percentage of bookstore sales I might lose from that.
Of course, this is the basis of the publishing plan featured in
"Aiming at Amazon," which discusses it in detail.
