RE: [SBIG] Re: roof vs. dome

Chris is right on both counts. I've got a TI dome that's been operating
almost 4 years. The major problem with it was the shutter mechanism, mostly
with the cable system. However with a few simple modifications it's been
pretty reliable for the past year or so. I am not sure but TI may have
implemented some or all of the fixes in their current dome. Dome rotation
has almost never, if ever been a problem with mine except the need to
replace the belts about once a year. Keep in mind this dome operates
275-300 nights a year. But they are for sure more prone to problems.

Domes vs roll offs are always a tradeoff. My dome is located next to my
host's roll off and I get to see the differences side by side. His gets
much dirtier, the dew when we have it just soaks everything, and he can't
image in anything much over a 5-10 mph wind. I routinely run in a 20+ mph
wind with no problems. and simply do not have a dew issue. Also I use a
Boltwood cloud sensor and never have to worry if the scope's clear of a roof
if the weather gets poor and needs to close.

Whatever you decide I think a very important thing is to have someone nearby
in case of an emergency. What if the shutter or roof didn't close in the
morning with impending inclement weather moving in? And the list of reasons
goes on. Just my .02 cents. YMMV.

Just about everybody I know with a dome has had mechanical problems,
either with the dome rotation or the shutter mechanism. It appears to me
that many, if not most commercial domes are far less reliable than we'd
like. Rolloff roofs, on the other hand, are much simpler, and likely to
be quite reliable. Unfortunately, they don't provide the sort of shelter
(during operation) that is desirable for a truly remote telescope.
